Steps of Hope Overdose Awareness Walk

May 20 @ 5:20 pm 8:00 pm

Please join Steps of Hope Iowa, along with Mom’s Against Drugs and Drug Epidemic Awareness Walk Across America at the DMACC Ankeny Campus on Monday, May 20th, where we will take Steps of HOPE for Overdose Awareness. There is no registration fee and all are welcome. We will gather at the gazebo, near the lake and across from the Culinary Institute (building 7) to walk around the pond. One loop around is 1.182 miles. There will be tables set up with free information, resources to share and Narcan training and distribution.
Everyone is somebody’s someone. Daniel is my son, and his battle with substance use disorder ended November 1st, 2020. His fight has always been my fight! The stigma surrounding addiction must stop. It is hurting so many and hinders people from getting help.
My son had gone through treatment and had been in recovery for over 6 months. It felt like we were standing on a mountain top, we finally made it. I was so proud of him. For the 1st time in his life, he was proud of himself!!
Then on 11/01/20, the sheriff pulled into my driveway and delivered the absolute worse news any parent could receive, they were dispatched to a local hotel and upon arrival they found my son deceased from an accidental overdose. My whole heart shattered into a million pieces. This is not how our story was supposed to end!!
Daniel suggested (more than once) that I consider doing some sort of outreach to help “people like him”. So, I honor my son by hosting this walk to help others.
My son’s death is Not in Vain! He is my son! He is a brother! He is a dad!! No more shame!! No more stigma!! It can happen to anyone. Daniel should be turning 33, but instead, he is Forever 29.
My goal is to have resources available for every person that shows up and to bring HOPE!
