April 18 @ 7:00 pm – 8:30 pm
In observance of Good Friday, St. John’s Lutheran Church and The Arts at St John’s is pleased to present a moving performance of Stabat Mater by renowned Estonian composer Arvo Pärt. This sacred work will be conducted by Director for Worship Noah Smith on Friday, April 18th, 2025 at 7:00 PM at St. John’s Lutheran Church in downtown Des Moines. The event is free and open to the public.
Composed in 1985, Stabat Mater is a deeply reflective and profound work, written for two trios—one string ensemble and one vocal quartet. Pärt, celebrated for his unique tintinnabuli style, brings an ethereal, meditative quality to this piece, combining sparse yet powerful harmonies with a sense of timelessness. This performance is particularly meaningful, coming during the 90th year of Pärt’s life, a milestone for the composer who has been instrumental in shaping contemporary sacred music.
The performance will feature Grace Johnson, soprano; Lyza Cue, alto; Moises Salazar, tenor; Linda Swanson, violin; Rebecca Vieker, viola; and Anna Kucera, cello.
Stabat Mater will be a central element of St. John’s Good Friday service, providing a contemplative and soul-stirring musical experience as the community gathers in remembrance of this solemn day.
